NEW DELHI, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Britain has been unable to obtain the release of one of its citizens from a jail in India, despite the inmate's health problems during his sentence. British backpacker Daniel Robinson has suffered bronchitis, pneumonia and a kidney infection during his jail time in India, the Mail on Sunday said. Robinson was traveling across Tibetan China last winter when he entered an Indian military zone to seek treatment for one of his ailing horses. He was promptly arrested and charged with illegally crossing the border and became an espionage suspect. While Indian officials have since dropped the espionage allegations, they have been unwilling to release the ailing 38-year-old from his yearlong jail sentence. Robinson's mother, Angelina, told the newspaper her plea to the Indian government for her son's safe release has been unsuccessful. "This is a living nightmare," she said. "We are not saying the Indian system is at fault. It is their law. But we would ask the court to show compassion. Daniel had no ill-intent. I want to get my son out of that prison and back home."
