Television presenter Noel Edmonds is backing the Free Daniel Robinson campaign.Cheltenham chef Daniel was jailed for a year in January after entering India without a visa. An appeal is scheduled for March 1.

Daniel, 38, had malnutrition and breathing problems when he stumbled over the Tibetan border with two packhorses, who were also ill, in October.

Noel, as president of the British Horse Society, has written to Indian president Dr Abdul Kalam.

He said: "Faced with death for himself and his horses, Daniel sought aid and protection from the Indian authorities. To prolong his imprisonment would be to punish a man for an offence which was committed wholly without intention to do harm."
